Job Description

Job Purpose:

The Animal Conservation Worker – Primates is responsible for the care and conservation of primates at the National Zoological Garden. This role involves adhering to global standards of animal husbandry and welfare, as well as managing the enclosures where the primates live.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Animal Care:
    • Assist with primate display, breeding, and capture.
    • Perform general animal care tasks, including cleaning and feeding.
    • Implement environmental enrichment and primate conditioning training plans.
  • Maintenance:
    • Conduct pest control and maintain enclosure infrastructure.
    • Care for tools and equipment used in animal care.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Handle administrative tasks, human resources responsibilities, and stakeholder relations.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Essential:
    • NQF Level 3 – Grade 11 or equivalent with 5 years of relevant work experience, or
    • NQF Level 4 – Matric or equivalent with 4 years of relevant work experience.
    • Valid driver’s license.
  • Desirable:
    • Higher Certificate in Nature Conservation or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 5.

Required Competencies:

  • Specialized Skills:
    • Knowledge of captive animal husbandry and environmental enrichment.
    • Ability to work under pressure and manage tasks with a focus on quality, cost, and safety.
  • Interpersonal Skills:
    • Proven ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently.
    • Strong planning, organizing, interpersonal, time management, and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Additional Skills:
    • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Internet, and Outlook.
    • Ability to perform physical labor and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
