Legal Practice Council (LPC): Exciting Vacant Positions

The Legal Practice Council (LPC) is a vital institution in South Africa, ensuring the integrity and efficacy of the legal profession. As part of its ongoing efforts to maintain high standards and support the legal community, the LPC is currently looking to fill several vacant positions in its National Office and the Provincial Offices of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Cape. This presents a unique opportunity for qualified individuals to contribute to the legal field in various capacities.

Position: Risk Officer

  • Duration: 1-year fixed term contract
  • Reference Number: NO04/2024
  • Provincial Office: Gauteng (Midrand-National Office)
  • CTC Salary Package: R28,350 per month

Minimum Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric/Grade 12 Certificate
  • NQF Level 7 in Risk Management / Compliance / Finance / Law
  • NQF Level 8 in Risk Management / Compliance / Finance / Law (advantageous)
  • 3 years’ experience in risk management or compliance, with 2 years in a supervisory capacity
  • 5 years’ experience in risk management or compliance within a legal environment, with 2 years in a supervisory position (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of Legal Practice Act, No 28 of 2014, Section 109 Regulations, and the Code of Conduct for all Legal Practitioners, Candidate Legal Practitioners, and Juristic Entities
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Risk Management Practitioner (IRMSA), Certified Compliance Practitioner (CISA), and Certified Fraud Examiner (ACFE) are advantageous

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute risk management processes, including risk identification, assessment, mitigation/control, monitoring, and reporting
  • Implement the approved risk management plan
  • Assist National and Provincial Offices with monitoring the risk register
  • Keep abreast of trends in risk and compliance
  • Monitor the implementation of the risk management framework and policy
  • Assist Risk Champions with escalated risk and compliance concerns
  • Produce reports for the Senior Manager of Risk and Compliance
  • Coordinate training on the risk management framework and policy
  • Provide inputs for quarterly risk awareness articles for the LPC
  • Assist in preparing the Risk and Compliance Committee agenda
  • Consolidate the Risk and Compliance action list
  • Monitor and update the LPC risk register
  • Develop policies for the Risk and Compliance department
  • Allocate duties to subordinates and monitor individual performance
  • Participate in performance reviews and provide coaching to subordinates

Position: Senior Administrator: Risk & Compliance

  • Provincial Office: Gauteng (Pretoria) x2, KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg) x1
  • Reference Numbers: GP10/2024, KZN03/2024
  • CTC Salary Package: R358,726 all-inclusive per annum

Minimum Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • National Diploma in Paralegal Studies or Administration (NQF 6)
  • 4 years administrative experience
  • Computer literacy (MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of Legal Practice Act

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reconcile interest payments and import data from reconciliations
  • Receive and capture audit reports, verifying them as per checklist
  • Identify areas of non-compliance and firms that have not submitted audit reports timely
  • Prepare reports on non-compliance and send letters requesting payment for late submissions
  • Capture approval on the electronic portal linked to the Fidelity Fund System
  • Prepare compliance enforcement letters and perform procedures related to new and closed legal practices
  • Produce monthly statistical reports and handle telephonic enquiries
  • Maintain an updated departmental database and accurate files of correspondence and documentation
  • Provide guidance and transfer skills to junior administrators
  • Assist Legal Officers with investigations and liaise with SAPS and IRBA
  • General administrative duties

Position: Filing Clerk

  • Provincial Office: Northern Cape (Kimberly)
  • Reference Number: NC03/2024
  • CTC Salary Package: R215,800 all-inclusive per annum

Minimum Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric/Grade 12 Certificate
  • 2 years administrative experience
  • Knowledge of Legal Practice Act, No 28 of 2014
  • MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive and sort correspondence for the department
  • Organize and maintain records accurately
  • Streamline the document filing process for easy retrieval
  • Maintain a record of finalized files for storage and capture data into the system
  • Make copies of documents for the agenda and complete requisition for files
  • Liaise with the document warehouse for offsite storage of documents
  • Retrieve files from archives and handle telephonic enquiries and walk-ins
  • Maintain a proper filing system ensuring accurate diarization and filing of correspondence and documents
