The City of Johannesburg invites South African unemployed youth to apply for the Internship Programme 2024.
About the Internship Programme
The internship programme is an initiative by the City of Johannesburg aimed at addressing the growing demand from tertiary institutions for students to gain on-the-job experience. This experience is either a prerequisite for acquiring an academic qualification or a requirement post-acquisition of an academic qualification for experiential training. The City is committed to providing work-based training for students, helping them gain valuable industry experience.
This opportunity is open to youth within Johannesburg communities who qualify for the internship and have not participated in an internship programme before. The programme offers positions that will last for up to 18 months.

Available Internship Positions
Position: Internship – Media, Public Relations, and Channel Marketing Specialist

- (Qualification completed with a minimum of 360 credits): R9 531,54 pm (Basic Salary, no benefits)
- (Enrolled as a student): R3 500,00 pm (Basic salary, no benefits)

Minimum Requirements
- Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Media Studies (or related field)
- Valid Code 8 Driver’s License
- Only City of Joburg residents will be considered
Primary Function
Provide support and assist the Assistant Director of Media, Public Relations, and Channel Marketing to ensure the provision of extensive media communications, liaison, and monitoring services to the Group Finance Department. This enables the department to develop and maintain an open and professional image with the media and customers.
Key Performance Areas
- Plan, develop, implement, track, and manage media, public relations, and channel marketing campaigns
- Create and maintain a favorable brand image of Group Finance and the City’s services and products
- Manage the Department’s and Joburg brand and raise awareness of the city’s priorities, programmes, and projects
- Build relationships and respond to media questions/queries from print and online residents and customers in a timely, accurate, and honest manner
- Work effectively with colleagues to disperse appropriate media, public relations, and channel marketing communications content
- Review and monitor the effectiveness of Group Finance and the city’s media activities and assess them against goals (e.g., ROI and KPIs)
- Research emerging technologies and trends and provide thought leadership and perspective for adoption
- Manage the outcomes associated with the utilization, productivity, and performance of staff in the media and public relations sub-unit
- Manage the operational assets and resources of the branch cost-effectively and efficiently in accordance with the legislative framework of the City’s policies and procedures
- Comply with all relevant legislation, manage and mitigate risk effectively
