Programme Details

Annual Remuneration: R130,560.00 (T05 of a category 3 Local Authority)

Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered for the Fire Fighter Learnership Programme 2024, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: A Grade 12 certificate.
  • Physical Capability Test (CPAT): Applicants must pass this test to demonstrate their physical fitness.
  • Medical Test: Candidates must pass the NFPA 1582 medical test.
  • Driver’s License: A valid C1 driver’s license is required.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35 and must possess proficiency in at least two of the official languages of the Western Cape (Afrikaans, English, or isiXhosa). This includes the ability to speak, read, and write in these languages.

Candidates must be prepared to work shifts and overtime as required. They must also be willing to work at any fire station, fire service installation, or section within the jurisdiction of the Bergrivier Municipality as directed by the Chief Fire Officer.

Key Competencies

  • No Criminal Record: A police clearance certificate (not older than three months) must accompany your application.
  • Physical and Mental Fitness: Applicants must be physically and mentally fit to operate under extreme conditions, including heat, heights, confined spaces, and exposure to water, blood, and deceased individuals.
  • Resilience: No phobias related to confined spaces, heights, depths, water, blood, darkness, isolation, or corpses.

Job Responsibilities

As a learner firefighter, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Firefighting Activities: After completing your training and acquiring the necessary qualifications, you will be involved in firefighting and emergency operations under supervision. Your goal will be to minimize risks to life and property.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Prepare for emergency incidents by educating the public and maintaining high safety and operational standards.
  • Equipment and Facility Maintenance: Ensure that all equipment and vehicles are in safe and sound working order. Maintain a clean and organized working environment.
  • Administrative Functions: Perform basic administrative tasks under supervision to ensure that all relevant records are maintained.
  • Performance Management: Participate in the municipality’s Performance Management and Development System.
