Fire Fighter Learnership Programme 2024

The Bergrivier Municipality is inviting unemployed South African youth to apply for the 2024 Fire Fighter Learnership Programme. Bergrivier Municipality, headquartered in Piketberg, about an hour from Cape Town, currently has several openings for qualified individuals who meet the minimum job requirements.

  • Learner Fire Fighter West (Velddrif) – GD10/381/VD
  • Learner Fire Fighter Piketberg – GD184/381/PB
  • Learner Fire Fighter Porterville – GD185/381/PV

Salary: R130,560.00 per annum (T05 of a Category 3 Local Authority)

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 with Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
  • Medical Test NFPA 1582
  • Code C1 driver’s license

Experience:

  • No prior experience is required. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-35.

Additional Requirements:

  • Proficiency in at least two official languages of the Western Cape (Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa) – must be able to speak, read, and write.
  • Must be able to work shifts and overtime as required.
  • Willing to work at any fire station, fire service facility, or section within the area of jurisdiction as directed by the Chief Fire Officer.
  • No criminal record (a police clearance certificate, not older than three months, must be submitted with the application).
  • Must be physically fit to operate under extreme conditions and pass an annual Departmental Physical Test.
  • Must pass a medical test, including a banned substance test, conducted annually or bi-annually.
  • Should not have phobias such as claustrophobia, acrophobia, aquaphobia, or any other relevant fears.

Job Purpose:

To perform various tasks related to firefighting, emergency rescue services, basic medical care, fire prevention, and equipment maintenance. This role involves responding to emergencies to protect lives and property within the municipality, as per the Fire Brigade Services Act (Act 99 of 1987).

Key Performance Areas:

  1. Firefighting and Emergency Operations: Once qualified, learners will participate in firefighting activities and emergency responses under the supervision of seniors and officers in charge to safeguard lives and property in the municipality.
  2. Emergency Incident Preparation: Assist in preparing for emergency incidents, educating the public, and ensuring that equipment and vehicles are maintained for operational efficiency.
  3. Maintenance and Hygiene: Ensure that fire station facilities and equipment are properly maintained, safe, and hygienic.
  4. Administrative Duties: Perform basic administrative tasks to maintain necessary records.
  5. Performance Management: Participate in the Municipality’s Performance Management and Development System.
