SA Cargo Services: Safety Officer Opportunity
SA Cargo Services is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the position of Safety Officer, based in Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines at our PE-Gqeberha branch. The Safety Officer will play a key role in promoting a safe work environment by advising on safety measures, conducting risk assessments, and implementing preventative actions.

Job Purpose
The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that the workplace complies with OHS regulations and fosters a culture of safety. This involves conducting risk assessments, advising on best safety practices, and enforcing safety measures to protect both employees and the work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and implement new safety procedures, including training and the use of PPE.
- Ensure all lifting equipment is regularly inspected and tested according to legal standards.
- Ensure all driven machinery (forklifts, cranes, etc.) is checked and tested as required by law.
- Verify that machine operators are properly certified.
- Ensure lifting equipment is used according to manufacturer specifications.
- Ensure hoppers and conveyers are safely set up and operating properly.
- Conduct risk assessments during operations, identify potential hazards, implement measures to eliminate or minimize risks, and document findings for review by Transnet, DoL, and SAMSA.
- Hold quarterly meetings with safety representatives to discuss incidents and improve safety practices.
- Organize safety-related training for staff, including safety inductions.
- Collaborate with shipping lines, Transnet, and customers to meet safety requirements.
- Perform monthly spot-checks on safety equipment such as firefighting gear, first aid kits, and safety harnesses.
- Ensure safety representatives complete monthly and quarterly inspection lists.
- Investigate and validate all safety-related incidents and accidents.
Minimum Requirements
- Qualification in Health and Safety or SAMATRAC certification.
- Computer literacy.
- Experience in stevedoring (advantageous).
- At least 5 years of experience in a similar role.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to take initiative.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and under pressure.
- Willingness to work occasional long hours and weekends.
