The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is committed to conserving and maintaining South Africa’s rich biodiversity. We are seeking a Horticultural Conservation Worker 3 – Estate to join our team at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort, Gauteng.
Position Overview
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the natural areas of the estate, including fire control, perimeter maintenance, erosion control, and the management of invasive species.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications:
- Grade 10 with a Job-Specific Qualification (NQF 2) and 3 years of relevant experience; OR
- Grade 12 with a Job-Specific Qualification (NQF 4) and 2 years of relevant experience.
- A Higher Education Qualification (NQF 5) in a relevant field will be an added advantage.
Skills & Competencies:
- Knowledge of basic conservation, alien invasive species control, and perimeter maintenance.
- Experience operating horticultural motorized equipment (e.g., chainsaws, ride-on lawnmowers, brush cutters).
- Understanding of veld fire control and risk management.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement alien and invasive species control, including herbicide application.
- Maintain perimeter fencing and ensure security measures are upheld.
- Conduct infrastructure maintenance and participate in veld fire control.
- Provide customer service and assist visitors as required.
- Contribute to risk and safety management within the estate.
