Job Overview:
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is seeking qualified candidates to join its Protection Services team as Security Officers. These professionals will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and security of the university’s assets, staff, students, and visitors across various campuses.
Key Responsibilities:
Security Services:
- Patrol university premises to prevent and detect security threats.
- Enforce access control and ensure adherence to security policies.
- Monitor and report defects in security infrastructure such as gates, streetlights, and burglar-proofing.
- Identify, report, and act promptly on emergency incidents.
- Secure crime scenes until supervisors arrive.
- Complete administrative tasks related to security incidents, including writing accurate reports and statements.
- Operate security systems and conduct preliminary investigations when necessary.
- Provide night-time escort services for staff.
- Respond proactively to security-related incidents and record all occurrences accurately.
- Conduct searches and safeguard keys, lost-and-found items, and other security-sensitive materials.
Access Control:
- Enforce UJ’s access control procedures.
- Verify personnel access permits, student IDs, visitor passes, vehicle permits, and work orders.
- Conduct bag and vehicle searches per standard operating procedures.
- Lock and secure gates and doors after hours.
Customer Service:
- Offer professional and friendly protection services to staff, students, and visitors.
- Assist with event security and emergency response.
- Uphold a professional image and provide excellent service.
Health & Safety:
- Act as a first responder in emergencies such as fires or medical incidents.
- Properly use and maintain security and personal protective equipment.
Professional Development:
- Undergo continuous training and development as required.
- Follow guidance and instructions from senior security personnel.
Minimum Requirements:
- Matric / Grade 12 / NQF4 equivalent qualification.
- Valid Grade C Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) registration.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office proficiency).
- Clean clearance record from the South African Police Service.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in security services.
- Medical, psychological, and physical fitness suitable for the role.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
- NQF5 qualification or higher.
- Experience with electronic access control and video management systems.
- Prior experience in educational or corporate campus security.
- Possession of a Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP).
- Higher PSIRA grades or additional security accreditation (e.g., Grade A or B, Armed Response, Special Events Security).
- Valid SAPS firearm competency certificate.
- Training and/or experience in firefighting and first aid.
Working Conditions:
- Shift work as per university operational requirements (24/7/365 shifts, including weekdays, weekends, and nights).
- Travel between different campuses may be required.
- Uniform required and exposure to all weather conditions.
- Potential requirement to carry a firearm.

- Physical and mental fitness assessments.
