Purpose of the Role
Transnet Freight Rail is looking for motivated and capable individuals to join as Trainee Train Assistants. In this role, you’ll support the Train Driver in safely and efficiently operating various types of trains—freight, passenger, high-speed, and heavy haul—to ensure timely and secure delivery of cargo, meeting customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Signing On & Preparation
- Report for duty and prepare assigned locomotives
- Conduct equipment checks and ensure cleanliness
- Assist with start-up and brake testing procedures
Locomotive & Communication Equipment Setup
- Collect and test radios, telemeters, and handsets
Pre-Trip Examinations
- Perform full inspections of the train before departure
Shunting Operations
- Safely conduct shunting tasks, place/remove wagons as per orders
- Update vehicle lists accordingly
In-Transit Assistance
- Monitor train movement and signals
- Assist during incidents or emergencies
- Ensure operational continuity and safety
Administrative Duties
- Maintain train journals and submit reports
- Provide timely incident feedback and operational support
Minimum Requirements
- Age: Minimum of 21 years (as per SANS 3000 standards)
- Height: At least 1.6 meters
- Physical Fitness: Must pass medical exams for:
- Vision
- Hearing
- Mental fitness
Training & Certification
Candidates must complete both theoretical and practical training and successfully obtain certification to operate independently as a Train Assistant.
