About JICS

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is an independent oversight body mandated to inspect correctional centres, report on conditions of incarceration, and ensure the humane treatment of inmates. Operating independently from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), JICS works to uphold transparency, accountability, and respect for human dignity.

Independent Correctional Centre Visitors (ICCVs) act as the “eyes and ears” of JICS within correctional facilities, monitoring daily conditions, handling inmate complaints, and advocating for fair treatment.


Role Overview

As an ICCV, you will:

  • Visit assigned correctional facilities regularly
  • Engage with inmates and staff to monitor conditions of incarceration
  • Document and report incidents (e.g., deaths, segregation, use of force)
  • Support JICS officials during inspections and investigations
  • Handle administrative tasks, including complaint tracking and detailed reporting

Requirements

  • Grade 12/Senior Certificate (mandatory)
  • Computer literacy
  • Community nomination from a recognised organisation (within last 6 months)
  • Ability to work independently & in a team
  • Knowledge of Batho Pele principles
  • Assertiveness & resilience under pressure
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills
  • Driver’s licence (advantageous)
  • Preferably residing near the correctional centre
